Bishop Gerald Almeida was born on March 7, 1946 at Udyavar, a small town, in Mangalore Diocese of South Kanara District, Karnataka State He hails from St. Francis Xavier's Parish at Udyavar. He is the eldest son of late Mr Paul Almeida and Mrs. Theresa Almeida. He has three brothers and a sister. Bishop Gerald had his early education, at St. Francis Xavier's Middle School at Udyavar and at the local SVS High School. He responded to the call of God and joined the Diocese of Jabalpur on June 24, 1965. It is a lucky coincidence that on the very same day, after a long period of 32 years, his appointment as the Coadjutor Bishop of Jabalpur was announced. Bishop Gerald had his seminary education at St. Augustine's Jabalpur and at St.. Charles' Seminary at Nagpur, where he completed his philosophical studies and graduated from SFS. College. For his Theology he was at St Joseph's Seminary at Allahabad for one year and thereafter he was sent to the Papal Seminary at Pune. He was ordained a priest on Dec. 14, 1974 by Bishop Leobard D'Souza at Sts. Peter & Paul's Cathedral at Jabalpur. His first appointment was at Sakwah.Mission Station as Copastor. Thereafter, he had worked at Deori. In 1984 he was appointed as the Director of Jabalpur Diocesan Social Service Centre at Mandla, as well as the Joint Secretary for the correspondence of Jabalpur Diocesan Education Board. He worked as the Administrator of Katra Hospital, at Mandla for a year. Bishop Gerald has spent 22 years of his priestly ministry in the tribal district of Mandla. He was for three months at St. Margareta Parish at Muenster, Germany in 1992. On his return to India, he was appointed as the Parish Priest of the Holy Spirit Parish at Shahdol. He was appointed as the Coordinator of the M.P Regional Resource Team for animation, as well as the Director of the new Social Welfare Centre for Shahdol Deanery. He was nominated by the MP Bishops as a member of the Project Selection Committee of Caritas India. Then he was appointed as the Coadjutor Bishop of Jabalpur on June 24, 1997.- His Episcopal Ordination as Bishop was held on Sept. 17, 1997. He took charge of the office of the Bishop of Jabalpur on May 16, 2001. on Bishop Theophane O. Pram's voluntary retirement.
