Dalit groups staged a rally April 24 in the national capital and some even tonsured their heads in a symbolic gesture in support of their long-standing dues.
Braving the scorching sun, 500 dalits from across the country assembled at Jantar Mantar and tried to take a rally toward parliament but were stopped by police.
The dalits are demanding the incentives promised to them more than three decades ago.

Reangs are among the 75 primitive tribes of India determined on the basis of pre- agricultural level of technology, low level of literacy and declining or stagnant population.
They live in Tripura and including Reangs, the northeastern Indian state has 21 scheduled tribes. They engage in Jhum cultivation, a local name for slash and burn agriculture. Tripura has.
This system involves clearing a piece of land by setting fire or clear felling and using the area for growing crops of agricultural importance such as upland rice, vegetables or fruits. After a few cycles, the land loses fertility and a new area is chosen.

Mallika Sarabhai, a renowned dancer and social activist, opened the five-day festival with the them, “Lives and Livelihoods,” that attracted filmmakers and film critics from across India.
Sanjay Kaka, a renowned filmmaker from Delhi, lauded the festival for bringing together social activism and filmmaking. He said all issues related to activism and filmmaking got an opening at the festival.
